Plate and shell heat exchangers present an interesting combination of plate exchangers and shell exchangers. They combine the best features of both: the efficiency of plate exchangers and the safety of tubular exchangers.
The inner plates are welded together, which eliminates the joints. This type of heat exchanger can therefore operate at temperatures ranging from -200 ˚C to 500 ˚C.
This type of plate heat exchanger offers a solution for systems where fluid flows are significant and asymmetrical.
District heating
Heat exchangers play an important role in district heating systems.
The variant of the plate and shell heat exchanger with an open construction can generally be considered the best solution: as it is possible to very easily clean one side of the exchanger, this type of exchanger is often used as a primary exchanger in large boiler systems that serve to protect them from impurities in the pipelines.
Due to the high flow rate in these cases, shell and plate heat exchangers can be manufactured with two separate plate packs inside a single shell. Both can be opened and cleaned independently, which is a considerable advantage when working with fouled fluids.
